All the children in Bluebirds follow individual timetables that are regularly reviewed and updated so that we can be sure we are meeting the children's needs as they develop. We utilise a range of different strategies in Bluebird class so that everybody learns in the way that suits their learning needs.
Communication is at the heart of everything we do in Bluebirds and each child has a specific communication plan that enables them to progress in the way most suitable for them. We have a total communication environment and we use PECS, AAC, SCERTS, Gestault language processing (GLP) and other communication strategies within our curriculum.
We work on specific skills within the classroom following a curriculum that is multisensory and has a large emphasis on meeting children's sensory needs, prompting independence and fostering life skills. We then take these skills to different areas within our school environment and then off site. Off site learning is an important aspect of the Bluebird curriculum and we try to access the community wherever possible.
In Bluebird class we also regularly take part in Attention Autism sessions. These sessions are fun and engaging and help us to develop our attention and communication skills. This is achieved by focussing on the fundamentals on the early fundamentals of language, which include an awareness of our peers, listening, shared attention, switching attention and turn taking.
Below is some further information about strategies and frameworks we use in Bluebirds including an example individual timetable which may help you understand a rough structure to a Bluebird day.
