At Whitfield Aspen we have a weekly SIBS Club to support children in our school who have siblings with additional needs or serious life long conditions, whether they be at our school or elsewhere. We currently have 68 children in our sibs club across Mayfield and Richmond,
Each child has the opportunity to meet in a group of similar age at least once a term on a Thursday afternoon. From Reception to year 3 we do activities based on what the children in those groups like with the aim of building strong connections and friendships with other children who have similar life experiences. From year 4 to year 6 the aim is to continue to develop those friendships whilst also enabling conversations to happen, either as a group or privately, to help children to work through and understand their feelings. We provide information of the SIBS charity where children can find information and support if they want it.
Sometimes we arrange activities or trips for parents or carers to attend to enable the children to have experiences with their close adult that they might not be able to have in their everyday life outside of school.
