Puffin

Welcome to Puffin Class

This last term our topic has been 'Children's Favourites'

Our children just LOVE Julia Donaldson books and the grown-up's love them just as much.

First, we started with the story of Room on the Broom. Following on from the excitement of Halloween the children were still very motivated by their real life experiences.

We started off with a sensory story, which engaged all of the children's interest in the story.

Following this we completed lots of  matching, sequencing and role play activities to promote the development of language and oracy skills.

We made some pastry wands in cooking which were just delicious. We used communication boards to help us cook them as independently as possible!

Our Pastry Wands

We used picture and symbol instructions to make some spooky crafts!

Our spooky creations!

We made magic wands and witches hats to help us role play our story of Room on the Broom.

Take a look at our sparkly wants and our pointy hats!

We then moved onto The Gruffalo, we just love this story. Particularly the animals, we gave them all different voices!

We had a great time during our sensory story for the book, we had our hands in green slimy scrambled snake and listened as we heard the owl hoot.

During this story we learnt lots about the nocturnal animals and what that word means. We found out about habitats and where the animals in our story like to live in a real woods. We sequenced our story and labelled pictures too.

We followed picture, word and symbol instructions to create our Gruffalo faces. Then we cut up the instructions and sequenced them to recount our experience.

Gruffalo faces

We peeled apples to make Gruffalo crumble, yum yum!

We explored the texture of clay to make snakes. This worked our fine motor skills as we rolled and stretched the clay. We then observed the change in the material as it dried. Once it was dry and solid we painted our snakes.

Clay snakes

The next story we learnt about was Zog. We already find dragons, Princesses and gold stars so motivating in Puffin class so this was an absolute hit with all of the children!

We used Lego and Numicon to create dragon shapes. We used our mathematical language to talk about the shapes we had used, prepositions to talk about how we were building the dragons and our creativity to think of an idea!

Lego and Numicon Dragons!

We had the best time creating dragon fire blowers. We followed instructions to make these with prepared materials. We then tested them by blowing through them and we loved watching the 'fire' streamers flow in the wind as we ran with our dragons!

Dragon Blowers

As well as our stories this term we have also celebrated Diwali by making clay Diya lamps and watching the battery candles glow in the dark and created incredible Bonfire Night pictures in the style of Jackson Pollock.
