Archery in Tudor England

  • At the time, archery was a national sport as well as being important to defence.
  • Bows could be up to 1.8meters / 6ft fall (that's approximately one Mr. Lowrey).
  • Large French armies had been defeated by smaller English armies consisting of well-trained archers.
  • British archers captured by the French could have had the two fingers used to pull the wire on their bow cut off, rather than being kept prisoner.

We would like you to try making your own bow and arrow at home, using either a lolly pop stick or a wooden tea/coffee stirrer.

Have fun! How far does your 'arrow' go? Have a think about the forces in action when you do.
