Aspen is the District Specialist Provision, within Whitfield Aspen School, and has classes for primary aged children with an EHC plan identifying their profound, severe and complex learning needs. In September 2014 a Satellite class for 12 pupils on the Aspen role opened at Aylesham Primary School.
Incorporated in the Aspen Early Years class is a pre-school provision, offering part time Observation and Assessment placements for children aged 3 to 5 years.
All pupils on the Aspen role benefit from the rich and varied inclusive opportunities. The specialist classes are organised into approach based teaching, to enable pupils to access the curriculum in a way that supports their individual learning needs. The whole school benefits from specialist rooms and areas such as the music room, kitchen area, messy play room, hydrotherapy pool and Forest School. All pupils in the specialist classes access a variety of enriching off-site learning opportunities linked to the termly themes and topics.
The school works with many agencies to support all the needs of the pupils. The NHS provides Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech and Language Therapy for pupils in the school who are on their case load or who are referred to them. The school also employs a highly skilled private Speech and Language Consultant. She works with the class teachers to support communication needs throughout the day linked to pupil’s individual learning outcomes. The school curriculum is enhanced by the work of a play therapist and a music therapist who support individual pupil needs.
