Year 3 Introduction Letter 2017

Welcome to Year 3.  Mrs Parker-Gorman is the class teacher in Giraffe Class and Mrs Tingey and Mrs Bailey are the class teachers in Zebra Class.

There is a high expectation for pupils in Year 3.  Pupils are encouraged to build on their independence skills, this involves things like passing messages on to teachers, signing up for a reading book quiz and packing their bags at home time.  Pupils are expected to try their best and are not told off for incorrect answers if they have tried.

Zebra class pupils each have a contact book if you need to contact Mrs Tingey or Mrs Bailey; please write in this accordingly.  If you need to contact Mrs Parker-Gorman, please write a note or contact the office who will make a telephone or face to face appointment between you.

The following topics will be covered by Year 3 and trips through the year will be linked to these topics:

SCIENCE:  Plants, Rocks and Soils, Animals including humans, Light and Forces and magnets.

HISTORY: Up until Christmas, pupils will be learning about changes in Britain from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age.  After Easter, pupils will be learning about the Roman Empire and its impact on Britain.

MUSIC: Pupils are learning to play the Recorder, these are provided in school but could be a possible Christmas present idea for practice to continue outside school.

ARITHMETIC: Every week there will be a lesson based entirely on arithmetic skills.  Pupils are encouraged to work individually and to improve on their own ability.

Reading: at least ten minutes most evenings should be set aside for reading. Please share and enjoy books together at home regularly.

Literacy and Numeracy: Zebra class will set homework on a Thursday, for pupils to complete and return to class by no later than the following Wednesday and Giraffe class will set homework on a Monday for pupils to complete and return to class by no later than the Friday.

Throughout the year, pupils may also be asked to find out things for themselves, for other topic work being covered.

Pupils may be placed in detention for not completing work in class, or for behaving inappropriately at school.  Detention is in break time and is located in Bee Class.

PE kit should be kept in school and will be needed on Monday and Wednesday.  In cold weather, extra kit is needed, and suitable clothing includes sweatshirts, tracksuits or leggings worn over the standard PE kit.  Trainers, if possible, would be helpful for games lessons on the field /playground.  Please ensure that all clothing, including PE kit, is clearly labelled.  Earrings should be removed for PE lessons.  If this is not possible, please supply tape to cover them.  Long hair must be tied back.

Swimming: Giraffe class will be swimming in Term 5 and Zebra class in Term 6.  A communication will be sent to you nearer the time.

Regular attendance at school is vital for learning and reasons for any absence should be notified to the office as soon as possible.  Family holidays should be avoided during term time.  Assessments for Years 3, 4 and 5 will take place in May 2018.

If you are able to support class, learning e.g. listening to children read, or you are able to offer personal experience or expertise on any of the listed topics, please contact the office who will arrange for you to meet with class teachers to discuss.

Thank you for your continued support.
